Bare Muddy Areas = Compaction

Really the best thing for your lawn is to keep off it as much as is possible in the winter months. Walking on waterlogged lawns not only makes them compacted, by squashing the soil particles together, but also the mud will come to the surface under your feet suffocating the grass plants.

Moss also thrives on lawns which are suffering from compaction meaning that as a result of poor drainage, water sits on or near to the surface.

The best solution is to aerate the lawn. This loosens the soil which allows the water to drain away with greater ease and permitting better oxygenation of the root zone. If this sounds familiar, read on for our Winter Spiking offer!

30 % discount on Solid Tine Aeration / Spiking

We are offering a 30 % discount on solid tine aeration/spiking during January to any customers who feel that their lawn could benefit from some extra aeration this winter. If your lawn is very soggy after rain or you have worn areas due to use (paths to sheds, areas used frequently for garden games etc) then this treatment could really make a difference in preparation for a lovely lawn next spring.

Get in touch and we can give you a quote over the phone!

Winterisation

The Winterisation treatment is a specially blended formulation of Iron and Seaweed that attacks moss as well as providing superb micro nutrients for the turf during the winter months. It promotes root strength rather than top growth so no extra mowing will be involved above that which we generally recommend for the winter months.

This is a particularly good treatment if your lawn is starting to look a little mossy as it will retard the growth making progress in the spring even quicker

To Mow or not to Mow.

Grass hardly ever stops growing in London – only once the ground temperature falls below 5 degrees – which is not very often! So far we have only had a handful of frosts so the ground is still pretty warm.

It is very important to keep on top of the lawn over the winter – letting it grow long will encourage moss and a consequent thinning out of the lawn as well as providing a breeding ground for disease and increasing thatch levels.

So we recommend mowing fortnightly during March and once a month in January and February as a minimum. Aim to leave the grass at least 4 cms in length, so raise the cutting bar appropriately before you begin to mow.

It is sometimes difficult to mow if the lawn is wet but do not be afraid to do so, unless the lawn is really boggy. It is probably best to mow in the afternoon, once the dew has gone and, if possible, on a windy day when drying conditions are best. A little bit of moisture will only mean that you need to empty the clippings more often from the grass box.

If you don’t think that your mower is up to the task and yet you need to do it, give us a call as our mowers are designed to cope well with wetter lawns and it will cost you less than you think.

Mower service.

Having a mower which does the job effectively without damaging the grass is very important. The first step is to make sure that the blades are sharp. We have found a great little shop in Southfields : Mowersure which we would recommend for getting your mower serviced over the winter months ready for the spring.

If you are worried about your mower and how well it cuts, we will happily come and inspect your mower and give you an unbiased opinion completely free of charge.
